Known as the "bloom," the waxy, silvery-white substance on the surface of blueberries acts as a barrier against insects and bacteria and helps to seal in the fruit's moisture. The bloom is also a sign of freshness since it fades with time and handling. This gives a frosty appearance to the blueberry, hence FROSTY BLUE FARMS!

We are proud of the quality of bloom found on our blueberries every year!

Why are we "Frosty Blue Farms"?

Lee & Wendy West, owners

We started Frosty Blue Farms as a family hobby and planted approximately 1.5 acres in 2000, with our first harvest in 2001. My wife and I, along with our 3 kids, attempted to harvest the fruit ourselves. It didn’t take long for us to realize we would not be able to keep up with the ripening berries. In the middle of the season, we found a small number of people to harvest the remaining fruit and have been fortunate to have wonderful help at our farm every season following.

After two seasons of harvesting the originally planted blueberries, we decided to expand the farm. Our family, along with some of our kid’s friends as hired-hands, completed the expansion of an additional 1.5 acres. Following the third season, we stuck our neck out and planted the remaining property, completing our 8-acre blueberry farm.

Many lessons have been learned each year on the farm, some of them hard but many others rewarding and successful. Our family has grown from five to sixteen with the addition of two sons-in-laws, a daughter-in-law and eight grandchildren. Our grandchildren love picking blueberries and eating them right from the bush! We do not worry about the grandkids eating the fruit in the field because we know our berries are clean and healthy. Nothing in this world is more precious than our grandchildren, and allowing them to freely eat all of the berries they want is our best evidence for the safety of our fruit.

Recently the wholesale market returns have not been conducive for small farms like ours. Blueberry returns in Florida are now geared for large, commercial plantings based on high volume and lower return per pound. Although the history of our small family farm has been a success, these changes to the Florida blueberry market allow us to implement our true dream moving forward.

This dream is to deliver the fresh, delicious blueberries we have always taken great pride in, directly to you the consumer. To keep our small farm viable in today’s commercial market, our fruit will be available for shipping immediately following hand-harvest. Our berries will be delicately packed in climate-controlled packaging and shipped directly to your door via FedEx®. This is a very exciting transition for our family and will delight the health-conscious consumer who loves to eat sweet, fresh blueberries.

You will know where the berries you are eating were grown, harvested and shipped from: our beautiful, clean, family-owned farm. You will not need to question how old your berries are at the time of purchase, which is often three weeks especially when berries are imported before they hit the grocery store shelves. The West family is here for any questions you have. We truly are a small, family farm with the simple goal of creating relationships with customers like you who enjoy our superior products. Thank you for your support and helping keep our farm viable in today’s changing fruit market.
